PHMB Levels

Levels vary from those first discovering mountain biking, to those looking to work on advanced skills like drops, jumps and downhill riding. Join us to discover the amazing sport of mountain biking!

Listed below are the minimum skill and bike requirements that should be held before registering in a level.

Novice (BC & Alberta)

Before this class, kids must already:

  • Be turning 4 in the calendar year
  • Be able to ride a 2-wheel bike independently (without assistance)
  • Be able to ride up to 1-hour long
  • Ride comfortably at various speeds and on small hills (up and down)

Skills developed in this level:

  • Trail etiquette & riding with a group
  • The hover position – standing up, hovering over seat, pedals flat
  • Steering competently – avoid obstacles, turn corners
  • Riding over uneven surfaces – gravel paths, dirt trails, small sections of roots and rocks
  • Riding on narrow paths/trails

Junior (BC & Alberta)

Before this class, kids must already:

  • Be turning 6 in the calendar year
  • Have a bike with gears and front and back handbrakes
  • Be able to hover- standing up with pedals parallel to the ground
  • Ride comfortably at various speeds and on small hills (up and down)
  • Competently steer – avoid obstacles, turn corners
  • Have consistent and controlled braking
  • Complete a ride up to 1.5 hour long

Skills developed in this level:

  • Trail etiquette & riding with a group
  • Riding on narrow uneven surfaces – single track dirt trails, larger sections of roots and rocks
  • Front wheel lift
  • Intro to trail cornering
  • Intro to log rides and ladder bridges
  • Intro to downhill and uphill trail riding

Intermediate (BC Only)

Before this class, kids must already:

  • Be turning 8 in the calendar year
  • Have a bike with gears, and front and back handbrakes (front suspension is recommended)
  • Be able to perform the ready position – standing up, knees and arms bent hovering over seat, pedals flat
  • Have some trail riding experience – dirt single or double track
  • Comfortable and confident changing gears when appropriate
  • Turn on tight corners
  • Be able to ride up hills

Skills developed in this level:

  • Proper braking and gear shifting technique
  • Front and rear wheel lift
  • Pumping, jumping, drops and trail cornering
  • West coast dismount
  • Intro to technical downhill and uphill trail riding
  • Intro to line choice
  • Intro to technical trail features (wood features, jumps, and drops)

Advanced (BC Only)

Before this class, kids must already:

  • Be turning 8 in the calendar year
  • Have a bike with front and back gears and front and back brakes (front suspension is required)
  • Be able to perform the ready position – standing up, knees and arms bent hovering over seat, pedals flat
  • Have some downhill trail riding experience – dirt single track
  • Understands the concept of choosing a “line”
  • Display proper braking and gear shifting technique
  • Be able to perform a front wheel lift
  • Be able to ride up hills for extended periods

Skills developed in this level:

  • Weight distribution
  • Advanced braking technique
  • Bunny hops, front and rear wheel lifts
  • Advanced pumping, jumping, drops and trail cornering
  • Advanced technical downhill trail riding (steeper descents, rocks and roots with speed)
  • Advanced line choice
  • Advanced technical trail features (wood features, jumps, drops, and rock faces)
